Reading the Meta Ad Library for competitor analysis

How long an ad has been running is the cheapest public signal that it works. What the Meta Ad Library tells you, and where it misleads.

Short answer

  • Run duration is the strongest public signal of an ad's performance.
  • Keeping history, not a single snapshot, is what reveals which ads were dropped.
  • The library only shows what is live; the past disappears unless you record it yourself.

The most common mistake in competitor research is copying whichever ad has the most likes. The Meta Ad Library does not show likes — but it shows something better: duration.

Duration is a proxy for performance

No brand keeps a money-losing ad running for weeks. If a creative has been live for forty days, it is working for that brand. Likes usually only tell you how attention- grabbing a creative is; duration is an endorsement that came from the purchase side.

Keep history, not a snapshot

The library shows you what is live today. The ad paused yesterday is not there — and that is the most valuable information of all: which creative was tried and dropped.

So competitor records are not overwritten on each scan; they accumulate:

  • the date the ad was first seen,
  • the date it was last seen,
  • and how many days it ran in between.

A paused ad teaches as much as a live one.

Variant count betrays budget

The same creative running with eight different copy variants means the brand is putting real budget behind it. One variant is usually a test; eight is a campaign.

Extract the pattern, not the picture

What you take from the library is not the image but the pattern: which angle it opens with, what it says in the first second, where it places proof. Rebuilding that pattern with your own product is both safer legally and more effective than imitating the image.

Frequently asked

  • Yes. Meta publishes live ads together with their first-seen dates.

  • No. Outside political ads no spend is shown; your signals are run duration and variant count.

  • Three to five in practice. Beyond that the same patterns repeat and add noise.
